Don Bosco Ashalayam—Child Care Research Institute |
|
Don Bosco Ashalayam reaches out to children in distress, mostly in the street/slum/railway station areas. Once children are met they are assisted as per their need - age and gender. Primary concern is to be with him/her and offer whatever support possible. All the efforts are made for restoration – reaching the child to his/her own family through healthy adult interaction (basic literacy, hygiene and health care, psychological counseling etc.) During the 25 years of its existence it has helped thousands of children for restoration/rehabilitation. The organization has its humble beginning on 8th December 1985 with fourteen boys. Today Don Bosco Ashalayam has 600 children in 25 foster care homes and 3 shelters and reaches out to more than 5000 children on a regular basis through its Out Reach Programme .

Steps Towards Complete Rehabilitation keeping in Mind The Rights of The Child Street Presence: An adult presence with the young at risk in his struggles and adventures, suggesting to him various socially accepted possibilities. Weaning: Helping the child to give up the street to a shelter through various programmes. Grooming: The child is helped to make a change to socially accepted. Training — Time spent to research and to get qualification to earn a livelihood, Saving— Helps towards self-reliance by earning and Homing— Restoration to one’s own family. Restoration enables the organization to reach out to the society, understand the social issues that led the child to the streets, work on awareness and advocacy, work with various stake holders to understand, accept and be with children. When restoration is not possible they are accepted to the various foster care homes of Ashalayam/referred to other NGOs keeping utmost priority for the abused, trafficked or vagrant. So, Ashalayam's phase starts in the streets/slums/railway stations and then proceeds towards restoration/ homes which is followed by rehabilitation which means job-trained /job placed creating a benchmark for the children in the society.
